I am vs. I wanna be

Around the globe societies take a toll on a person’s basic need. Finding the ideal place in society is a major dilemma people face day by day toiling at a job providing only basic social needs. Dreams of higher social status, along with escaping a perilous trap of becoming a “wanna be” is a risk. Every being, aware or not, faces social challenges of fitting in without smothering in these very ideas of a life of repetitive failures. What if on the way to reveal myself I march the path of conceit and reverie annihilates me? Who is to be blamed for collapse of reasoning? Questions, questions, questions! Throughout this paper I will demonstrate that a defiant social behavior leads to growth as well as to a fiasco. By concentrating on writers and scientist I am going to lead you through the web of a complex relationship between a person and a society.

Society is inevitable. It will always be there as a pleasure and a burden. Society puts labels on everything as good or bad, rich or poor, normal or aberrant, and perfect or flawed. Although some of these stamps are accurate, most of them are fallacy. The Pressure to be, or become, Perfect in today’s competitive society, a person’s strive for perfection, the fact that so much emphasis is placed on one’s outer appearance, is not easy to live with.

No matter who we are or where we live, society puts immense pressure upon each of us. We are typically faced with this pressure by media models. Today external beauty is more important for a winning social status then intellect. Being stylish is tasteful, and the sayings “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “beauty is only skin deep” come to mind when I think about just how much emphasis is placed on outer appearance. This social “perfection” is in contrast to who I am. For example, in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley this act of abandon one by society for not being “beautiful” is extremely evident. One example of this judgment is the way the community wrongly treats the “monster” on the assumption that he actually is a monster. This is not justified by anything except his demeanor. They are also afraid of things about which they know nothing. In this novel she describes well how society ignores everyone who does not fit into the picture of external beauty. No beauty, no acceptance.

As the problems in society arise, it ought to be the duty of every individual to ease the burden by helping to solve these problems. Too often, individuals pass off that problem with the hope that others will pick up the slack. The problem is that too many shrug their responsibility leaving an overwhelming degree of perils. Not enough people see the whole picture when it comes to society’s problems. If something hurts the society, it hurts the individual as well. For example, the problem of homelessness is not just the problem of those who are without residence. Their plight affects us all. Homelessness hurts the local businessman whose customers are frightened away by the homeless man living on the corner. It hurts those who have to commute to work via public transportation and must deal with the panhandlers. It hurts those whose homes are burglarized by the homeless man looking for money to feed their families. There is no isolated problem in society and each problem has a ripple effect that eventually hurts everyone. Even if only for selfish reasons, every individual should help to solve the problems of society. That is exactly what Ram Dass means by saying, “At one level of abstraction, when your hand is in the fire, my hand is in the fire.”

In today’s society education is an essential part not only of pursuing a career but to identify wrongly inherited social morals. In college a person can determine his strengths and weaknesses in whatever path he/she decides to take in life. Universities widen horizons and give a unique opportunity to achieve these goals and to reach new plateaus in life. When someone has a worthy goal it is usually something that is good and something that is important to him/her. Some people do not believe that a goal of being a powerful businessperson has the same worth as a goal of just getting a job in the first place. What really matters is what the person who sets the goal thinks. Everyone’s goals are different but if one is chosen that is truly worthy to the person achieving it, then it will mean success for them. The most important part of being successful is actually working for the goal and trying to achieve it, whatever it may be.

Many people automatically assume that the only successful people in this world are the ones who have achieved great wealth. It is a way that some measure their success. A reason why people do this may be the fact that many people look at money as a sign of what they have achieved. The more money they have, the more they have achieved, the less they have, the less they have achieved. Many people see money as a prize for achieving their goal. Every one of them is a Person in Society, however what really matters is whether the society is here for the benefit of that Person, or is Society here to benefit from that person. In my opinion, the best way is if both benefit the society and the person. Then, and only then, Person and Society reach new levels of respect and widen each other’s horizon.

Education, as an important factor, provides endless opportunities to advance to a higher social status. An educated person ought to have a strong well-rounded comprehension in many areas. Diversity is essential in the sense that many different things inspire thought, which then foster permanent results from these experiences. Anyone who has the audacity to call him/herself educated needs to have a firm grasp of many different areas. One area of the important fundamental thinking process is Science. This process starts with curiosity, asking the question, and then moves on to theorizing or guessing. Subsequently, this person takes his or her theory and puts it to the test by conducting various experiments. Finally this individual will draw a final conclusion from those findings by excluding feelings influencing experiments and deceptive conclusions. Another central aspect of being educated is a firm grasp of the use of Language. This person needs to develop the gift of relating his thoughts and feelings into a clear and interesting way cannot be accomplished only through education but calls for experience as well. Such a proficiency level could lead to the apex of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Abraham Maslow , known for establishing the theory of a hierarchy of needs, wrote that human beings are motivated by unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher needs can be satisfied. Maslow, felt that people are basically trustworthy, and self-governing. Humans tend toward growth and love. Violence and other evils occur when human needs are thwarted. In other words, people who are deprived of lower needs such as safety may defend themselves by violent means. He did not believe that humans are violent because they enjoy violence. Neither did he believe that those humans lie, cheat, and steal because they enjoy doing it.

Maslow guards his theory with general types of needs such as physiological, safety, love, and esteem that must be satisfied before a person can act unselfishly. He called these needs "deficiency needs." As long as we are motivated to satisfy these cravings, we are moving towards being, toward self-actualization. According to Maslow the highest level “Being/growth” is "the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming ." People who have everything can maximize their potential, and Maslow believes that at this level a person seeks knowledge, peace, esthetic experiences, self-fulfillment, and unity with God. And now what is that it? Now we are trapped at the top and can’t advance, the only real progress would be to exhale your last breath, or “humiliate” my self by descending one or more steps back.

Millenniums ago emperors declared themselves as divine beings to reach the next transpersonal level. Abraham Maslow in last years of his life became founder of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology , however he never placed his research on Transpersonal Experience at the top of his Hierarchy. Another devoted researcher saw the need to revise and expand Maslow’s hierarchy. Skip Robinson modified the theory by adding Transpersonal Experience at the apex. In Transpersonal Psychology, one looks from a theoretical perspective - the cognitive process of moving beyond the personality into the Transpersonal self as a sort of mystical spirituality. It seems to me like the Transpersonal Psychology has no Rules at the Transpersonal Point of Consciousness , because at that point all rules simply must collapse. However, once Skip Robinson’s Horizontal/Circular Theory of Human needs is widely accepted, humanity could be better served by an embrace of an understanding of the manifestations of these Transpersonal Experiences.

Earlier Animal and Gaia are two more categories Robinson added to Maslow’s hierarchy below the Deficit level. At the level of Earlier Animal, in times of stress and crisis, humans tend to regress into more primitive human behavioral level, extremely ancient impulse of consciousness, by taking the reptilian brain perceptions . At this level person’s perception is similar to the one of the reptilian brain where the choice falls between, symbolically seen, attack or flight. At the Gai level, which Robinson placed below the Earlier Animal level, humans experience their intrinsic connection to the nature. The care a person develops at this level of consciousness about the possible collapse of the ecosystem due to carelessness may be as well the highest level of the hierarchy. This explains why Dr. Robinson reversed Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs into circular or spiral model. After all, throughout the course of our poignant existence we indeed go back and forth on the ladder to satisfy our and social basic needs. This permanent revolution in strive to satisfy our own basic needs, Dr. Robinson depicts in his new theory of Human Basic Needs as the movement of planets and, or, galaxies. And in fact, as a part of the universe we do go in circles.

I have chosen International Business Management as my career, not because I would like to become a successful businessman and set myself up comfortably, but to enhance the society that helped me to reach higher levels of understanding. Note, I was raised and educated by the combined experiences of Croatian, German, Yugoslav, and American societies. Every human being strives to improve his/hers place in the community. Some oblivious to the surrounding social hypocrisy, lacking the dream of true ecstasy succumb hypocritically, accepting basic social conformity. I, in contrast, yearn to make a difference, and feel that the diverse educational system I have been through helped me to reach that level of thirst. Years of diverse education helped me to realize that “I wanna be” is a paved and easy road, and “I am” is a continuous process of person’s advancement towards a superior life as a homo sapiens.

Ten Years After

Trenutno sam u novom projektu.
My back to future part three.
Poslovni ljudi, diplomati i svi oni kaj imaju penez putuju avionima. Zakaj?
Promet, aerodromi, provjere, opasnosti, stres. Sve to košta vremana. Sve to košta novaca. Imate ga na bacanje. Svaka Vam čast. Vi nebute nigdar bogati, penez morti bute imali.
Moj novi projekt bi trebal uključiti hrvatske proizvođaće. Na taj naćin dobili bi izvozni produkt.
